A Toronto man is facing second-degree murder charges after a 19-year-old from Scarborough was killed in Ajax early yesterday morning. Police allege the suspect went to a house party before stabbing the victim multiple times.

Mahishan Kugathasan, 19, arrived at the Ajax-Pickering hospital shortly before 2 a.m. on December 23. He had suffered multiple stab wounds that resulted in, “significant trauma” according to police.

Hospital staff called police regarding Kugathasan’s injuries. Durham Police started by interviewing the witness who brought Kugathasan to Ajax-Pickering hospital.

Kugathasan was taken to a Toronto-area trauma centre for treatment, but died of his injuries.

That evening, Durham Police arrested Anojh Tharsan, also 19, from Toronto in the course of their investigations. Police allege Tharsan knew Kugathasan and stabbed him after a house party on Rossland Road and Ravenscroft Road.

Tharsan is charged with second-degree murder and will appear in bail court on December 24. An autopsy on Kugathasan’s body is scheduled for the same day.

Kugathasan’s death is the eighth homicide in Durham Region this year and the second in Ajax in the last few weeks after Maurice Fullerton, 33, was shot in his home on November 11.

Detective Victor Alves is spearheading this investigation. Anyone with information can reach him at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5407, or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
