Six issues chronicling one of most epic – and defining – battles of the Roman Empire was clearly not enough for Toronto DJ and Ajax resident ‘Fearless Fred’ Kennedy, who promises that a second run of the Dead Romans saga will be hitting the newsstands next year.

“We hope to announce it at the New York comic convention in the fall,” said Kennedy, a Q-107 DJ who got to add comic book writer to his resume in 2023 after the success of his first major comic writing gig, the six-issue Dead Romans historical drama and love story.

“If all goes according to plan,” he said of the second series he is writing with co-conspirator and artist Nick Marinkovich, “it will be released next spring.”

(Working title: ‘Dead Romans Invictus’)

Kennedy, better known on the Toronto afternoon radio dial as Fearless Fred, never actually expected Dead Romans to take off, noting previous comics projects “imploded at the launch pad.”

But the comic run, released on the Image Comics label, did and its success has opened “a lot of doors” for him in the industry, noting he has four other stories coming out that are currently tied up with non-disclosure agreements.

“But Dead Romans, that’s my baby.”

Dead Romans is the story of the hugely important Battle of Teutoburg that took place in 9 AD in what is now Lower Saxony in Germany. The battle was between the advancing Roman Legion army and a group of Germanic warriors, secretly led by Roman-trained Prince Arminius, who had gathered all the tribes of Germania to attack his own battalions in a brutal massacre.

The Romans were decisively destroyed in the ambush, bringing an end to Roman expansion in Europe.
