Tornado watch issued for part of Ontario

A tornado watch has been issued for part of Ontario.

The orange weather alert is in effect for the Kenora area, south to Fort Frances.

“Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and may continue into this evening,” Environment Canada said.

Wind gusts up to 120 km/h, toonie or golf ball sized hail, and up to 50 mm of rain could occur.

“The main threats are wind and hail, however tornadoes are possible,” Environment Canada said.

“Significant damage or destruction to infrastructure, homes and the natural environment is possible.”

“In the event of a tornado, or if a tornado warning is issued for your area: go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet,” Environment Canada added.

Severe thunderstorm watches and warnings are also in effect for parts of northwestern Ontario.
