There is the potential for a tornado along with thunderstorms and heavy rain in Ontario.
Strong wind gusts and a tornado risk are possible over portions of northeastern Ontario on Tuesday, Environment and Climate Change Canada said on X.
Earlier the weather forecaster issued a rainfall warning for areas northeast of Thunder Bay. Total amounts near 50 mm are expected, with locally higher amounts possible.
There is now a severe thunderstorm watch in the Timmins area to the Quebec border area. Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing wind gusts of 90 kilometres per hour Tuesday afternoon and evening.
The watch includes the risk of a tornado.
Severe thunderstorms are capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain. Power and utility outages are possible.
There is also a risk of thunderstorms in parts of the province including cottage country, areas north of Toronto and southwestern Ontario.
The risk could continue into Wednesday for southwestern Ontario, Environment Canada said in an earlier post on X.
In the Greater Toronto Area, there is a 30 per cent chance of showers overnight, and a risk of thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon.
