1. Schilling’s Patisserie aux Chocolate

Tucked away on Thomas St. is an adorable little shop boasting all things chocolate, plus some freshly baked croissants. You’ll find a cute little bakery/chocolate shop serving up some seriously delicious goodies in the former Circus Chocolates & Ice Cream spot. We’ll start with the Hazelnut Almond Crisp. Oh. My. Goodness. My grandmother in south India used to make something remarkably similar, although I have no idea what it’s called. (Sugar, not music, truly is the great equalizer, no?!). I wish I could ship them to my aunt there so she could bite into one and fill me in on the family recipe. Anyway, the Apple Walnut Strudel, which was served warm, also made me pause to enjoy the sugar high. The shop serves up a delightfully delicious beverage: Mexican Spicy Hot Chocolate. Using real chocolate powder and chili powder (reverse the ingredients when cooking a pot of chili), it’s $3.95 and best enjoyed in a mug while seated. It’s amazing — no sugar or sweetener added. Service is stellar.

2. La Parisienne Creperie 

House-made chantilly cream accompanies each crepe and boy, are they good. The strawberry reduction was nicely done. It wasn’t too sweet and that cream though … This “little piece of Paris in Bronte Harbour” opened in 1991 and new owners took over in 2014. The menu at this cozy French bistro offers an array of sweet and savoury crepes made fresh in-house, using local ingredients when possible. This tiny restaurant is adorable, making it the perfect place for a leisurely date. With French music playing, grab a window seat and people-watch, or take in the various framed prints on the wall.

3. Osmow’s

A Streetsville staple since 2001, Osmow’s has expanded across the GTA and is proving to be an Oakville favourite, particularly among those who are in school. The Hays Blvd. location we visited has a student special for $6.68, which comes with shawarma, fries and a drink. A fully-loaded order of chicken shawarma from Osmow’s rarely disappoints, nor does the size of their ‘super’ sandwich. In true made-to-order fashion, it’s topped with chicken carved from the spit, and everything tastes perfectly seasoned. The garlic sauce is divine, along with the hot sauce. Everything is made in-house at this Middle Eastern chain. Remember to show your student card to get the deal!

2. On A Bun

The menu at this Hays Blvd. sandwich shop lists a wide variety of Italian sandwiches, including Veal, Chicken, Steak and Onions, Meatball, Sausage and Onions, Veggie, and Eggplant Parmesan. I’ve heard so much about this authentic family run Italian sandwich joint that I had to finally make a pit stop for a quick bite and see if it’s really “perfection on a bun.” Old-world Italian recipes and techniques are followed at this shop, where you’ll feel as though you’re at a family gathering, from the way you’re greeted to the way staff bid you farewell. The Veal sandwich is everything you’d expect it to be – greasy, meaty, made to order – and then some. Make sure you add cheese and mushrooms to take it up a notch! The Eggplant Parmesan is also outstanding. Service is phenomenal.

1. Tavolo

One bite made me forget I was in an outdated shopping mall most frequented by my mom (and other seniors) and students on lunch break. This pizza was sublime. Tavolo, a longtime favourite, has been wowing Oakville diners who typically frequent other fabulous restos owned by Catch Hospitality Group. Try flagging a server on a Sunday night — it’s insanely busy. The pizza alone was worth the wait – fresh, fresh, fresh ingredients and that combination of margherita pizza plus salami.
