The pandemic first knocked it out. Then came a modern, electronic version. But all the while, customers yearned for yesteryear.
So Tim Hortons is making things right.
As of Feb. 23, Roll Up The Rim is returning to coffee cups.
The promotion will last until March 22, but will again become a regular yearly feature at Tim Hortons.
“We heard you, Canada: The iconic Tim Hortons tradition of Rolling Up The Rim is back and will continue to be a part of future contests,” the company has announced. The contest will also continue to be available on the Tims app.
The timing is just about right, too, as 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of Roll Up The Rim — yes, it started back in 1986 — albeit there were the lost years that started in 2020 when COVID-19 brought up health concerns over handing in portions of your cup to claim a prize.
The physical cup versions did make a return last year on a trial basis as the company gauged consumer reaction. The results were so favourable that the company decided to make the return permanent.
This year, there will be 30 million prizes to be won through Roll Up The Rim, including one of seven 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz vehicles, vacations, VIP experiences, electronics, gift cards, cash, plus over eight million donuts and over 17 million coffees.
“For decades, Canadians looked forward every spring to Rolling Up The Rim of their coffee cups at Tims, and we always heard they loved the tradition of winning a free coffee — a little thing that could make their day — as well as the chance of winning a grand prize like a new car,” said Axel Schwan, President of Tim Hortons.
Tim Hortons also recently announced some changes to its product delivery that will see fountain drink machines added to some locations. As well, the company said it is making improvements to its espresso-making equipment and upgrading the English muffins used in breakfast sandwiches.
