Do residents know that cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries? They are the ignitor for 20 per cent of all home fires.

To that end, the Thorold Fire and Emergency Services are holding a special fire safety open house on Oct. 14 with the theme: “Cooking safety starts with you. Pay attention to fire prevention.”

Being held at Fire Station 4 (2189 RR 20, Welland) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the campaign aims to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take when cooking to keep themselves and those around them safe.

“Thorold Fire and Emergency Services is encouraging all residents to educate themselves and to learn more about fire safety when cooking in their homes,” says Traviss Ketler, Thorold fire prevention officer.

“Remember, cooking safety starts with you. We invite residents of all ages to join us this Saturday at Fire Station 4 to enhance their knowledge of cooking safety in the home, and to view and participate in a variety of educational demonstrations and activities.”

In addition to a cooking safety demonstration, attendees will have the opportunity to watch a live fire demonstration, sprinkler demonstration and 100-foot ladder truck demonstration. There will also be activities, games and refreshments for the entire family.
