Tank season ready to get underway at Oshawa’s Ontario Regiment Museum

Tank season gets underway in a couple of weeks at the Ontario Regiment Museum at Oshawa Executive Airport’s South Field, and thanks to a new collaborative accessibility project the museum and at least one of its military vehicles will soon be accessible to everyone.

Project Uplift is a collaborative project that includes The Ontario Regiment RCAC Museum, Wounded Warriors Canada, the Abilities Centre and students from Ontario Tech University’s Engineering and Applied Sciences faculty.

The goal is to make an operational military vehicle – the LAV III – accessible to those with physical disabilities or limitations.

The students will be designing and building the devices to be installed on the LAV as part of their capstone design course over two semesters.  Wounded Warriors Canada will be raising funds to design and produce the final product.

The Museum, which will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. starting next month, also announced its weekend lineup for the season.

The first Tank Saturday will be on May 14 and opening day will have a new theme – ‘Worthy’ – and will celebrate the history of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps.

A month later, the three-day Aquino tank festival is back, and organizers are promising the show – already Canada’s largest military event with tanks, battle re-enactments and more – will be bigger and more engaging than ever.

On July 9 the museum will showcase ‘Canada at War’ with a demonstration of Canadian army vehicles and ‘Blitzkrieg’ will return in August with the World War 2 fleet on display.

Another new Tank Saturday will be ‘Armoured Recce’ with reconnaissance vehicles on display on September 10. ‘Armageddon’ – the Cold War Tank Saturday – will round out the season on October 15, while museum officials are promising something “special” for Remembrance Day after two quiet years.

The Ontario Regiment Museum also has expansion plans and is seeking public comments on the future uses of the airport’s South Field.

An in-person public meeting will take place in the council chambers at City Hall May 9 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will also be available virtually at calendar.oshawa.ca/Meetings.
