Surge in online shopping results in decline in seasonal job openings

This year, as is the case with many jobs in Canada, seasonal job postings are down compared to the same time last year.
A recent report from Indeed Canada found, as of November 2, there were 26 per cent fewer seasonal job postings compared to last year.
The reason for the decrease, unsurprisingly, has been attributed to an abundance of Canadians shopping online this year due to the pandemic.
Additionally, as of October 30, the number of job postings for retail and sales-related roles were down six per cent and 23 per cent respectively.
Fewer shoppers and crowds mean less traffic at businesses, which means less of a need for additional staff.
Further, while the number of seasonal job postings is down, it appears the interest for them among job seekers is also down—as of early November, approximately 1.4 per 1,000 job searches included a holiday-related term, compared to 2.2 per 1,000 last year.
Of this year’s companies seeking seasonal employees, the vast majority are in retail—nine of the top 10 companies seeking seasonal employees were in the retail sector.
