After multiple police cruisers responded to a call for a teen with a handgun in an Ontario town, police services are raising the alarm on a trending game called Senior Assassin.

Senior Assassin, also known as Killer or Assassins, is a water gun game played by high school seniors in the last few months of the school year.

The call for a teen with a handgun, which turned out to be a water gun, came in on April 24 in Collingwood, OPP said in a press release. But other police services are also concerned.

“The growing popularity of a water gun game called Senior Assassin has Ontario police departments warning against the danger for grad students at local high schools,” Niagara Police said in a post on X.

“We are asking students to avoid playing and avoid any unnecessary encounters with police. There will be 0 tolerance for people driving carelessly in attempts to shoot water guns at each other.”

In the U.S. a rollover crash in Itasca, Illinois was blamed on students playing the game in cars. No one was hurt in the crash.

In Collingwood, police took teens into custody on April 24. They were released after police determined that the firearm was actually a water gun and the teens were playing Senior Assassin, OPP said.

But nearly the same incident happened on April 28 in Collingwood.

This time, police were called for teens “acting suspiciously in front of a residence,” OPP said.

“It was believed that they had firearms with them in the vehicle,” police said.

Once again, multiple officers arrived and the teens were detained while the officers investigated. Again, the teens were using water guns and playing the Senior Assassin game, police said.

The OPP said that while it is good for young people to take time away from their devices and online gaming, this game could also alarm the public.

They ask teens to use brightly-coloured, plastic-type water guns that can’t be confused with a real firearm.

Police say the game players shouldn’t linger around other people’s homes or trespass on their property. Also, don’t wear face masks that cover the face.

“It is important for young people to understand how their actions could look/be interpreted by a member of the public, who is unfamiliar with the game that they are playing,” OPP said.
