Storms in U.S. delay flights at Pearson in Mississauga.

A number of flights into and out of Pearson Airport in Mississauga have been delayed on Thursday due to strong thunderstorms in New York City.

Pearson officials said in a post to social media this morning that “a ground stop has been issued at airports in the New York City area due to thunderstorms.”

They added that “as a result, some flights at Toronto Pearson will be delayed.”

A ground stop means some aircraft must remain on the tarmac at their airport of origin until flight conditions improve.

With dozens of daily flights between Pearson and New York City’s three airports (LaGuardia Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and JFK International Airport), it’s the busiest route at Pearson and one of the busiest in North America.

Some 10,000 flights each year leave Pearson for the Big Apple.

In a post to social media earlier Thursday morning, Pearson officials said while it’s sunny and 25 C in the GTA, and that they’re expecting 133,000 passengers at the airport today, the weather story is a bit different south of the border.

Heads up to all those travelling to the New York region — we’re expecting thunderstorms across the Eastern Seaboard, which may impact departing and arriving flights,” they said in a post to X (formerly Twitter).
