State-of-the-art 57-acre Mississauga sports park gets a new name

A huge, new sports park in west Mississauga now has its new name. And along with it, funding that will help speed up additions to the complex in the years ahead is also in the bank.

The 57-acre facility formerly known as Churchill Meadows Sports Park, which officially opened to the public last October as part of the $51-million state-of-the-art Churchill Meadows Community Centre complex, will be known as Mattamy Sports Park as of July.

City of Mississauga officials said in a news release that they’ve entered into a 25-year agreement with builder Mattamy Homes to rename the sports complex.

The year-round sports park, located on Ninth Line just north of Erin Centre Blvd. and next to the new 75,000-sq.-ft. community centre, is designed for all ages and abilities and offers a variety of recreational and leisure activities, City officials note.

It currently includes tournament-level sport fields with two lit soccer fields (one with a seasonal dome), a playground, spray pad, skate park, multi-purpose court, outdoor fitness equipment and trails.

“I am thrilled about this substantial investment in our community and it demonstrates Mattamy Homes’ tremendous partnership in building not just houses where people can live and thrive, but also building complete communities,” said Ward 10 Councillor Sue McFadden. “The funds associated with this agreement will kickstart construction on Phase 2 of the newly named Mattamy Sports Park, making it that much more of an attractive destination for our residents, teams and for tournaments.”

Jodi Robillos, the City’s commissioner of community services, said preparations for the name change are well underway.

“We’ll be installing signage on the seasonal dome over Outdoor Field 1, updating wayfinding and park signage, the City’s website and other promotional materials to reflect the park’s new name,” she said. “We look forward to sharing many exciting moments with residents and visitors who come to play, use and compete at the new sports park. This partnership will help us bring in more opportunities to Mississauga.”

Future development (Phase 2) of the Mattamy Sports Park will see a full-sized, lit cricket pitch, another multi-purpose sports field, tennis courts and a leash-free zone, officials say.

“Supporting the communities where we do business and playing a role in providing healthy and active lifestyle opportunities for families are important priorities for us at Mattamy Homes,” said Tim Warner, Mattamy senior vice-president. “We are proud to be partnering with the City of Mississauga on the sports park project and look forward to continuing to be part of the community for many years to come.”
