Here a camera crane gets ready for action at the St. Catharines' downtown intersection of St. Paul St. and James St.

While Niagara Falls gets most of the attention from film-makers coming to the region because it’s, well, Niagara Falls, the City of St. Catharines actively pushing to let cinematographers know that it’s a pretty scenic setting.

Downtown St. Catharines with its lack of high-rises and three-storey businesses with apartments on top could certainly pass for Anytown, USA (or Canada) and there is no shortage of old-school houses on tree-lined streets.

So the city is opening its doors. “St. Catharines is camera-ready! Are you a filmmaker looking for your next shooting location? Bustling city streets, crashing waves, luscious vineyards and historic architecture make St Catharines the perfect location for your next project.”

The city said that their Film Permit Applications need at least 10 business days before the start of filming in the Garden City but added, “If your production involves road closures or special effects or includes other special requirements we may require more time to process your application.”

As well, film-makers with a shorter filming timeline can contact the city directly at 905-688-5600.

“City staff are familiar with the film industry and what St. Catharines, and Niagara, can offer and will help you with your filming needs,” city hall says.
