St. Catharines craft beer lovers usually go to Dragan Brewing with cold suds in mind.

Owner Michael Nazareth told us that he had previously sponsored a dinosaur exhibit from Niagara’s GROW Community Food Literacy Centre, a Niagara Falls organization that helps people get access to healthier food, simply because “my son loves dinosaurs.”

“So I said, if you ever need help with something, let me know.”

They did. It turned out they needed a host facility for a fundraiser to boost their food supplies.

So on Friday (Feb. 18), the brewery is holding the Dragan Soupfest! from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm where local chefs from the Niagara Region will cook up two samplings of soup – Country Harvest Mushroom, and Slow Roasted Beef and Barley soups with the hot treats being provided by Broth Taking Soups & Sides.

Tickets are $25 and each one includes four servings of soup and rolls.

Nazareth said that during the event, “the Dragan retail store will be open, with limited indoor seating available. This is a great way to treat your family, friends, or staff for lunch.”

GROW Community Food Literacy Centre offer a weekly subsidized market to provide healthy, fresh foods to people with low-incomes, while also empowering members to make healthy eating decisions through cooking and gardening education. The group said this model addresses the long-term challenges faced by low-income residents and persons with disabilities in the community.

They added, “As we head into the third year of pandemic, GROW has seen a steady increase of people in need of their services within the community. There is an urgent need to support this cause, and any proceeds raised will go directly to purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and meat alternatives, eggs, dairy, and pantry staples for the GROW market.”

GROW’s Lentil and Barley Soup Mix will also be available for purchase at Soupfest! for $5. All proceeds from soup mixes purchased will support the GROW Community Food Literacy Centre. Dragan Brewing and Wine Company is located at 100 Grantham Ave S. Unit 1.

Dragan Brewing owner Michael Nazareth is changing it up on Friday as his brewery is hosting Soupfest! with all proceeds going to Niagara’s GROW Community Food Literacy Centre.
