Speeder clocked nearly double the limit in 60km/h zone pulled from the road in Caledon: police

Police have suspended the licence of a driver officers say was busted driving nearly twice the speed limit in a 60 km/h zone.

The OPP said on Wednesday that the traffic stop happened in Caledon when officers spotted a grey Toyota SUV travelling at a high rate of speed.

Police say the driver was clocked at 116 km/h and driving 56 km/h over the speed limit.

The driver was pulled over and charged with a stunt driving offence, which also came with a 30-day drivers’ licence suspension and a 14-day impound of the vehicle.

Police can lay a stunt driving charge if you are caught driving 40 kilometres per hour or more over the speed limit on roads with a speed limit less than 80 kilometres per hour, and driving 50 kilometres per hour or more over the speed limit.

Drivers could face a minimum of a one-year licence suspension if convicted of a stunt driving offence for the first time with “more severe penalties” for further convictions.

Police have been cracking down on speeders in Brampton and Caledon in recent weeks, including a 23-year-old driver from Brampton who was clocked driving more than 65 km/h over the limit on Highway 401.
