Sixteen travellers who’ll arrive at Pearson Airport in Mississauga next week have been given a new leash on life.

Toronto-based rescue organization No Dogs Left Behind is welcoming the 16 dogs, 12 of which are Golden Retrievers, from China on March 30 as part of a mission to both save the animals’ lives and give them new lives here.

The direct flight from China is expected to take 15 hours.

The dogs have been rescued from slaughterhouses in China and will spend a required six months at the Toronto animal sanctuary before being moved on to their adoptive families in the United States.

Rules in the U.S. governing the adoption of such animals from China require that they be quarantined before entering the country.

U.S.-based Golden Bond Rescue, a non-profit that seeks to save the lives of Golden Retrievers, has partnered with No Dogs Left Behind to give the 12 goldens loving homes.

No Dogs Left Behind, which also rescued the other four dogs from China, including a puppy saved from flooding, has found those animals homes in the U.S. as well.

The dogs will receive medical care in Toronto, as needed, and then be cared for at the shelter until they can move on to their new homes south of the border.

Those interested in donating to help provide care for the dogs while here can contact No Dogs Left Behind.
