Oshawa Fire crews were on the scene of a fire at a homeless encampment Tuesday evening, with plumes of smoke visible for miles.

The fire started at the rear of 720 Wilson Rd. S. just before 5 p.m. and brought out numerous amateur photographers to catch evidence of the smoke and speculate as to the source.

The fire occurred just a short distance from the Durham Region Bus Depot, which caught fire in a devastating blaze in August that cost Durham Transit 19 buses, including much of their recently acquired electric fleet.

Tuesday’s fire happened in a wooded area in the Farewell Creek valley lands and Oshawa Fire said “heavy smoke conditions” were visible “from across Durham Region.”

The fire was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported. Video of the aftermath showed lots of bike parts, several propane tanks, a few skids and assorted other non-organic remains left in a smouldering pile in the woods.

No cause has been determined.
