A monument to honour Sikh soldiers who died in an epic battle is being proposed for a Brampton Park.

The plan submitted by the Saragarhi Foundation Canada Inc. asks the City of Brampton for permission to build the monument at Chinguacousy Park as a lasting memorial to the 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment who defended their post against Afghan forces that invaded a strategic fort in British India (present-day Pakistan) in September 1897.

“We kindly request city council’s endorsement and support in moving this project forward. The Foundation is prepared to work closely with the City of Brampton on planning, design, and implementation to ensure that the monument reflects both historical accuracy and the values of our community,” states a letter from Dr. Kuljit Singh Janjua, Vice-Chair, Saragarhi Foundation Canada, to Brampton councillors.

Similar memorials have been created in England and India.

Dr. Janjua was to present his proposal to city council today (Oct. 15), but his appearance was cancelled. Councillors decided to refer the request to city staff, who will determine the merits of the proposal and later report back to council.

The proposal indicates Brampton was chosen as an appropriate location for the memorial because the city is home to one of the largest Sikh and South Asian communities outside India.

It goes on to state that the Sikh community is an integral part of Brampton’s social, cultural, and economic fabric.

“Establishing this monument in Brampton will not only honour these martyrs but also symbolize the city’s deep commitment to diversity, inclusion, and heritage preservation,” the proposal continues.

Along with serving as a lasting tribute to the soldiers, who the Saragarhi Foundation says are considered martyrs in the Sikh community, the monument will create opportunities for annual remembrance events and can serve as an educational platform for schools, residents, and future generations.

The group believes Chinguacousy Park is the best location for the memorial because of its accessibility, visibility and cultural significance to the community.
