Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch in effect – with the possibility of a tornado – for northern Durham and York Regions this afternoon.

The watch applies to communities between Uxbridge and Beaverton and between Newmarket and Georgina.
Conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms early this afternoon into this evening as a cold front moves in from the west.

Hazards include damaging wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h, nickel-sized hail, heavy downpours and the potential for a tornado.

A cold front will sweep across most of southern Ontario late this afternoon. Ahead of and along the front, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop, with some of those storms becoming severe, with damaging winds, heavy rain and hail the main threats.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Be prepared for severe weather and take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

When thunder roars, go indoors!

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports using #ONStorm.
