A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Hamilton and other areas in southwestern Ontario.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain, according to an alert from Environment Canada on Monday (Aug. 8).

There could be torrential downpours and strong wind gusts up to 90 km/h into this evening.

The thunderstorms are moving through southwestern Ontario.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
