Several Ontario towns and cities have already banned or placed restrictions on fireworks. Now, another large municipality is set to do the same.
On Monday, the Town of Oakville will vote on a report that recommends prohibiting the discharge and sale of consumer fireworks at all times.
Oakville already has strict rules that control the use of fireworks, limiting them to private property on Victoria Day, Canada Day, New Year’s Day and recognized religious or cultural celebrations.
The new rules, if approved, would take it further and impose financial fines starting at $300 for those who disobey.
Exceptions could be made if a permit is obtained from the fire department, but only if a professional pyrotechnician is in charge of the event.
A report that will be presented to council at Monday’s meeting says the prohibition is meant to prioritize health and safety while addressing concerns related to noise, property damage, fire risks, environmental impact and the well-being of people, pets and wildlife.
Other places, such as Brampton and Whitchurch-Stouffville, have complete bans in place, while Mississauga, Milton and Halton Hills, among others, have introduced several restrictions on the use of fireworks.
