Two Mississauga men charged in Toronto home renovations scam

Two Mississauga men are facing multiple fraud and other charges in connection with an alleged roof repair scam in Toronto in which police say a number of homeowners paid for work that was never completed.

Toronto Police said in a news release that between March and September of this year it’s believed that two men went door-to-door offering home renovation services, specifically roof repair and masonry work.

The men “used deceptive and high-pressure tactics to obtain roofing and masonry jobs,” police said in the news release, adding a number of victims paid the men for work that was not done.

“The renovations never were completed and the (men) often caused damage to the victim’s property,” police added.

William Quilligan, 53, and Dermot Quilligan, 43, both of Mississauga, each face multiple counts of fraud over $5,000 and fraud under $5,000 in addition to various other charges that include possession of proceeds of property or thing obtained by crime exceeding $5,000. They also face mischief/damage to property charges.

They’re awaiting their next court appearances in Toronto.

Anyone with information pertaining to this case is urged to call police at 416-808-1200 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477.

Toronto Police remind the public of the following:

  • be wary of unsolicited contractors going door-to-door, especially those using pressure tactics and demanding advance payment in cash
  • avoid impulse decisions to hire a contractor
  • do your research
  • select a reputable company and obtain a detailed written contract
  • there is no obligation to speak to a salesperson soliciting at your door
  • if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is

Victims of fraud can report the incidents to both police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
