If you live in Mississauga, you’ll want to be aware of a few new phone, text, and even letter scams.

Alectra Utilities recently released information on new scams where fraudsters are attacking Alectra customers.

According to Alectra, this is in response to increased activity in its service territory by fraudsters.

So, which scams should you be aware of?

1) Phone Scam

In the phone scam, someone will call you claiming to be an Alectra Utilities technician. The fraudster will demand payment in threaten to remove your Smart Meter, and install an analog meter.

You might also be told that your power will be disconnected for several hours during the meter swap.

That is, unless you immediately pay by credit card at random kiosks in grocery stores.

But it’s important to note that “Alectra Utilities does not charge customers for meter exchanges or ask customers to make payment using gift cards or at banking kiosks,” reads the release.

2) Text Scam

Here, you’ll get a text message claiming a refund is available for you from Alectra. It includes a fraudulent Interac e-transfer link to follow.

In this case, remember that Alectra never sends text messages to inform customers of refunds or service disconnections.

3) Letter Scam

Yes, there’s even a mail scam going around.

This one involves you getting a letter saying you have an outstanding amount owed for a Smart Meter deposit.

It’s primarily targeted at business customers and threatens disconnection unless a Smart Meter fee is paid immediately.

“Alectra Utilities does not charge customers for their Smart Meter and advises customers in advance of any changes to their service or account,” reads the release.

Here are some tips from Alectra to avoid falling prey to these scams:

  • Never make a payment for a charge that isn’t listed on your most recent Alectra Utilities bill
  • Do not provide any personal information, including your Alectra Utilities bill or  account number
  • Do not click on links provided in text messages
  • Do not allow the fraudster to arrange a time to visit your home
  • Alectra asks customers to remain vigilant and verify their account information with Alectra Utilities’ Customer Care Representatives directly if they suspect suspicious activity

If you believe you may be a victim of fraud or theft, you should contact your local police department to report the incident.
