A new bridge over the Credit River in south Mississauga is being built to make getting around the Port Credit area easier for pedestrians and cyclists.

The proposed 66-metre pedestrian/cyclist bridge is just one–but widely welcomed–part of a much broader City of Mississauga plan for the entire Lakeshore Rd. corridor.

As the City moves forward with the design of what it calls the “active transportation” bridge, which will span the river between Port Credit Memorial Park and the Port Credit Legion just north of Lakeshore Rd., it’s seeking public input until next Tuesday (May 10).

Those interested in participating can complete an online survey.

“This bridge will enhance mobility across the river for people walking, rolling and cycling,” City officials say.

Two bridge types, arch and truss, are being considered as the City reaches out to residents, businesses and others for feedback.

Feedback is also being sought on:

  • how the bridge should be illuminated: accent lighting may be used to highlight key features of the bridge, and lighting can also be concealed
  • how different users should be accommodated on the bridge: the project team is exploring different ways to ensure safety and comfort for all users, the City notes
  • what elements can create a good experience for all bridge users: the project team is looking at different features such as seating areas and interpretive elements (information about local history, vegetation and/or wildlife) to understand what should be incorporated in the preliminary bridge design. Public art by local and/or Indigenous artists may also be considered

The City’s Lakeshore Transportation Studies plan includes a series of interconnected infrastructure projects along Lakeshore Rd. including a bus rapid transit route in east Mississauga and the pedestrian/cyclist bridge across the Credit River.

A “Lakeshore Complete Street” initiative is looking at options to improve the experience for people travelling along Lakeshore Rd. and Royal Windsor Dr. from East Ave. (Lakeview area of Mississauga) to the Oakville border.

City officials said earlier that the huge endeavour will create stronger connections and support reliable transit across the city.
