Regional council votes to lift mask mandate in Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills; Burlington still in talks

Halton Regional Council has officially voted to revoke the Region’s mask bylaw effective March 21, in accordance with the province’s decision to lift its mask mandate in most settings on that same day.
The vote was held during a special council meeting held on Saturday, March 19, with a near unanimous vote (only one “nay”).
Starting this Monday, masks will not be required in Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills except for on transit, at long-term care facilities, and at congregate care settings province-wide.
Masks will still be required in Burlington, however, as the city plans to resume its mask bylaw discussion on Tuesday, March 22.
“We value the extra week and a half from when the Province announced the removal of its mask mandates in most settings, to see where the health indicators are, especially after the March Break, before making a final decision,” according to a statement posted by Burlington mayor Marianne Meed Ward.
Meed Ward said they were “not easy decisions, nor taken lightly” and said she values the extra time and discussion.

Halton Public Health continues to advise residents of locations where masks are still required that wearing a mask is an effective public health measure for reducing the spread of COVID-19, and asked residents to be respectful to those who choose to continue wearing a mask.
