Durham Region Election Primer

DURHAM Riding

The incumbent in Durham Riding, which includes Clarington, Scugog and Oshawa north of Taunton Road, is Erin O’Toole, the leader of the Progressive Conservative party of Canada. O’Toole, who has served in the House of Commons since 2012, defeated Liberal candidate Jonathan Giancroce by 7,000 votes in 2019.

O’Toole, a former Captain in the Canadian army and a lawyer by trade, has been known as a socially progressive Conservative, but his attacks on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau since he was elected leader of the PCs last October have seen his politics take a noticeable shift to the right.

Giancroce, an insurance underwriter and political science and governance major (Ryerson), has been elected by the Liberal Party to take another shot at O’Toole. Giancroce coaches curling at Ontario Tech and is a long-time soccer coach as well.

Patricia Conlin, an active anti-vaxxer and Max Bernier disciple on social media, is running for the People’s Party.

The NDP have not nominated a candidate in the riding.
