Drivers in Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and Niagara will face record high gas prices as early tomorrow (May 4).

Canadians for Affordable Energy (CAE), a watchdog agency that accurately predicts gas prices, says prices are expected to jump 4 cents at midnight to $190.9 per litre. Prices in other areas of the province are expected to fall just below that mark.

The amount is expected to match or possibly surpass the record high for Ontario set in March.

But that’s nothing.

Dan McTeague of the CAE warned earlier today that prices are rocketing to $2 per litre; an amount he predicts will be reached in time for the May 24 long weekend.

“I take no pride in saying that,” McTeague told a number of reporters when interviewed today.

The recent rise in cost is being attributed to Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine.

In May 2020, during the early stages of the pandemic, gas prices in and around the GTA were 94.9 cents per litre.
