RECALLS: Blinds, air fryers, beef and chocolate recalled in Ontario

Another week and another set of recalls in Ontario.

Residents are urged to check their homes for everyday household products and food items that may pose health risks including choking, burns, and allergic reactions.


Various Shades by Elite Window Fashions recalled

Highlight Shade

The company is recalling several products,including roller shades, high-lite shades, sheer horizontal shades, and Roman shades, all sold with ChainGuards and P-Clips. These products come in various custom colours and sizes.

Health Canada says the roller shade fails to comply with the Corded Window Coverings Regulations.

There is a danger that young children may become entangled in the looped chain, leading to potential strangulation and even death.

Additionally, the products may release small components that can cause choking hazards to small children.

Health Canada recommends cordless window coverings.

The company reported that 85,853 units of the affected products were sold in Canada between  July 2022 to March 2024.

Risks: Potential strangulation and choking hazards.

What you should do: Stop using the recalled products and contact Elite Window Fashions for replacement parts.

As of March 5, 2024, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.


Insignia™ Digital Air Fryers, Insignia™ Analog Air Fryers and Insignia™ Digital Air Fryer Ovens

Insignia™ - 5L/5.28Qt Digital Air Fryer - Black

The recall pertains to Insignia™ Digital Air Fryers, Insignia™ Analog Air Fryers, and Insignia™ Digital Air Fryer Ovens.

These products feature cooking chamber capacities ranging from 3.4 to 10 quarts and are made with plastic or a combination of plastic and stainless steel.

Each unit displays the brand name INSIGNIA on the top or front. A label located underneath each unit contains essential details such as model number and other relevant information.

The following products are part of the recall:

  • Insignia™ – 5L/5.28Qt Digital Air Fryer (Black)—NS-AF50DBK2-C
  • Insignia™ – 10 QT Digital Air Fryer Oven (Stainless Steel)—NS-AF10DSS2-C
  • Insignia™ – 3.4 QT. Analog Air Fryer (Black)—NS-AF32MBK2-C
  • Insignia™ – 5QT Analog Air Fryer (Stainless Steel)—NS-AF5MSS2-C
  • Insignia™ – 8 QT Digital Dual Basket Air Fryer (Black) —NS-AF8DBD2-C

The Air Fryers could experience overheating issues, potentially resulting in melted or broken handles and the glass on the doors could also break.

The company reported that 99,903 units of the affected products were sold in Canada and 183,443 were sold in the United States between September 2021 to November 2023.

Risks: Poses fire and burn hazards as well as lacerations.

What you should do: Discontinue using the products and register for the recall online here.

As of Feb. 20, 2024, the company has recorded six incidents in Canada concerning melted or broken handles on the air fryers and one incident of glass breakage on the air fryer ovens. No injuries have been reported.

In the United States, there have been 24 reported cases of overheating, melting or glass shattering, including six instances of air fryers catching fire. No injuries or property damage have been reported in the United States.


The Pie Commission brand Braised Beef Rib Pot Pie

The affected product is being recalled from the marketplace because it contains anchovies, which are not declared on the label.

The braised beef pies are sold in the 320-gram size with the UPC 6 28678 56205 9 and a best-before date of Nov. 21, 2024.

Risks: Poses health hazards.

What you should do: Individuals sensitive to specific ingredients or who may have allergies should avoid consuming the pies.

As of today, there have been no reported reactions associated with the consumption of this product.


President’s Choice brand Milk Chocolate with Toasted Coconut

The chocolates are being recalled because they contain hazelnuts, which were not listed on the label.

The following batch is part of the recall:

  • Milk Chocolate with Toasted Coconut: 300 grams— 0 60383 20922 3. Best before date:  Sept. 19, 2024.

Risks: Poses mild to severe health risks to those sensitive to tree nuts.

What you should do: Do not consume the product if you are allergic to hazelnuts or other tree nuts.

As of today, there have been no reported reactions associated with the consumption of this product.
