RECALL: More than 110,000 cars affected by huge recall in Canada

A massive car recall has been issued that impacts more than 110,000 vehicles in Canada.

Transport Canada said that the issue has to do with the cars’ fuel systems.

A valve on the impacted vehicles may stick open and cause the fuel tank to deform.

That could lead to the fuel gauge reading incorrectly and there being a loss of power to the wheels.

“A sudden loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash,” officials said.

The recall is from Ford and involves the 2012 to 2018 (inclusive) Focus models.

Overall, there are 110,138 cars in Canada that are impacted, the notice says.

Transport Canada said this is a second recall and a repair completed as part of the first failed to address the problem.

“The recall repairs completed by a Ford dealer during recall 18S32 (Transport Canada recall no. 2018-577) may not have been done correctly. As a result, another repair is required,” officials said.

It’s also an expansion of that previous recall.

Ford will notify owners about the problem by mail and advise them to take their car to a dealership.

In the meantime, before repairs are completed, drivers should keep their fuel tank at least half full, officials said.

When the vehicle is taken to the dealership, a software update will be completed and, if needed, the previously mentioned valve will be replaced.

If the valve is replaced, “the dealer will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module, as necessary,” the notice said.
