The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has announced a new recall in Ontario after potential salmonella contamination was discovered, prompting warnings for consumers to check their kitchens and avoid eating certain bakery and dessert items sold earlier this summer.
Reason for the recall
This action follows the CFIA’s investigation into a broader outbreak of foodborne illness, prompting an urgent withdrawal of the affected products from the marketplace.
Affected products
Between June 1 and June 30, 2025, a host of pistachio-based products were sold at Shamyat Cuisine, located at 4141 Dixie Rd., Mississauga. The following recalled items were clerk-served and do not have UPC codes:
- Shamyat Pistachio Arabic Ice Cream (1 kg and clerk-served)
- Pistachio Mabrume
- Pistachio Finger Baklawa
- Pistachio Flower Baklawa
- Pistachio Square Baklawa
- Pistachio Faisaliyea
- Pistachio Basma

What consumers should do
Consumers are strongly advised to:
- Not consume, sell, serve, or distribute any of the recalled items.
- Check their homes for any products purchased during the specified timeframe.
- Discard the items securely or return them to the point of purchase for a refund.
Health risks associated with Salmonella
Even if food appears or smells normal, it can still be contaminated. Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning may include:
- Fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea (short-term)
- In severe cases—especially among children, pregnant individuals, the elderly, and immunocompromised persons—complications such as severe arthritis may occur
If you believe you’ve been affected after consuming any of these products, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Ongoing investigation
The recall coincides with an active outbreak investigation led by the Public Health Agency of Canada, supported by the CFIA’s food safety inquiry. The agency is also confirming that all recalled products have been removed from the supply chain.
Broader outbreak context
This recall is part of a larger wave of pistachio-related product recalls across Canada. In August, CFIA had issued recalls for various pistachio-containing pastries, including baklava distributed in Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick, after dozens fell ill.
As of late August 2025, a Salmonella outbreak linked to pistachio products had sickened more than 60 individuals across B.C., Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec, with at least 10 hospitalizations reported.
