Dessert recalled over Salmonella in Canada

Chocolate sold in Canada is being recalled due to possible salmonella contamination, officials say.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency asked that consumers check to see if they have the recalled chocolate and, if so, to throw it out or return it to where it was bought.

Two products are affected: chocolate date squares and original date squares, both from Palm Bites.

Each affected product is three squares and the recall applies to every “PROD DATE” from Oct. 8, 2024 to Feb. 14, 2025.

They were sold in Ontario and online, meaning it could have gone to other provinces and territories as well, the CFIA said.

The recall was triggered by a CFIA inspection and there haven’t been any reported illnesses associated with the products, officials said.

“Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,” the recall notice said.

“Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.”

Long-term complications could include severe arthritis.

If someone gets sick from eating a recalled product, they’re advised to contact their health-care provider.
