This is the complete Millennum Trail in Niagara Falls. However, only 500 metres will be closed from the end of May to the end of June.

The City of Niagara Falls Public Works department is telling residents and hikers that a 500-metre section of the Millennium Trail will be closed from May 30 to June 30 due to the completion of a long-standing restoration
work of the nearby trunk sewer project area.

Phase One of the restoration started last June and was completed. Phase Two, which included 14 sewer sections and 13 maintenance holes in an area 1,560 metres in length, started December 2021 and was also finished. This is now the third and final phase.

The area that will be off-limits to the public is from Thorold Stone Road to 500 metres northeast of Portage Road.

“This closure is necessary to ensure the health and safety of the public while work is taking place,” said the city’s Public Works department. “Thank you for your patience while we complete this necessary work.”

The Stamford interceptor trunk sewer is located in Niagara Falls and runs parallel to the Ontario Power Generation hydro canal from Dorchester Road to the Niagara Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant at 3450 Stanley Avenue.

The Niagara Region’s inspection program identified a number of sewers and maintenance holes in the Stamford interceptor trunk sewer that are corroded and in need of rehabilitation so the city had little choice but to shut down stretches of it one-by-one.
