A Port Colborne man has been charged with sexual assault after allegations that an adult woman was grabbed from behind yesterday (March 8) on a city street.

Police responded to the call just past 2 pm when the victim said she was walking on West St. near Clarence St. and noticed a black Ford Focus driving near her in what she thought was a suspicious manner.

While she continued to walk, she said she was approached from behind and sexually assaulted. While she suffered minor injuries from the altercation, she didn’t need to go to the hospital.

However, she alerted nearby bystanders who were able to photograph the suspect’s car before he took off in it.

At 4:30 pm, the police were able to identify the suspect and arrested Lachlan Glass, 21, of Port Colborne, who was then charged with sexual assault.

He remains in police custody, scheduled to attend a bail hearing later today (March 9) via video link to the courthouse in St. Catharines.

Police believe this is an isolated incident and said there was no ongoing threat to public safety.  They also thanked the bystanders who intervened and got a photo of the suspect’s car.

Anyone with information in encouraged to contact the lead detective by dialing (905) 688-4111, option #3, extension 1009167.
