One of Hamilton’s most popular independent cinemas is celebrating a birthday on Tuesday (March 1) and doing so in a big way.

Hamilton’s Playhouse Cinema is celebrating its 3rd birthday and to honour the momentous occasion, they are screening the classic film Cinema Paradiso, and for those who are theatre members, the screening is FREE.

The Playhouse Cinema, located on Sherman, just north of Barton Street, reopened to the public on March 1, 2019, after undergoing an extensive and breathtaking restoration the year previous.

The first film screened at the refurbished theatre was none other than Cinema Paradiso. The film follows a boy who discovers a deep love of film in war-torn Sicily.

The Playhouse quickly became a popular destination for dedicated cinephiles and film buffs. The theatre’s restored old-world charm transported moviegoers to a more indulgent, sometimes simpler, time.

And then, COVID-19 entered the equation.

Movie theatres have taken a beating since the onslaught of the pandemic and independent theatres, in particular, have had to find new ways to keep their heads above water.

The Playhouse hosted a number of outdoor movie screenings throughout the city and private ‘bubble’ screenings in the historic theatre.

They also introduced popcorn and snack take-out nights and took advantage of those rare times in the last two years when theatres could open, albeit at limited capacity.

This celebration is certainly well earned and comes on the same day that capacity limits and proof of vaccination requirements have been lifted in theatres across Ontario.
