SIU investigates after Brampton pedestrian struck by police car

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a man was seriously injured following a police pursuit that started in Whitby.

A 33-year-old man was seriously injured and arrested following the interaction with police Thursday (April 13), the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a press release.

The incident started in the morning when a vehicle was stolen in Whitby, the SIU says.

Durham Regional Police Service officers pursued the driver for a time.

Then, the driver of the stolen vehicle crashed at Neilson Road and Finch Avenue East in Scarborough. The driver fled on foot.

After that, a delivery truck was reportedly stolen in Toronto.

Officers from Durham Regional Police Service, York Regional Police and Toronto Police Service pursued the driver.

The driver stopped in the area of Brimley Road and Ellesmere Road and fled on foot.

An officer deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon (commonly known as a Taser) at the man.

He was arrested and taken to hospital where he remains.

Two investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers in interactions that result in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
