Durham Regional Police are searching for a teen believed to have visited an elderly woman’s apartment in Whitby and brandished a knife.

At around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, police received reports of a male armed with a knife at the apartment building at 712 Rossland Road East.

The male reportedly went up to the 12th floor and knocked on the door of an elderly woman’s apartment. Once she answered, he brandished the knife and demanded she exit the apartment.

The woman refused and was able to close the door.

“The suspect fled through the back of the building and walked southbound on Teddington Crescent,” said police. “At this time, this appears to be a random act.”

The suspect is described as a white male, 5-foot-4, approximately 16 years old, with dark curly hair, a round face, and a heavy build.

He was wearing a black puffer jacket, black Under Amour shirt, dark pants, and white ear buds.

Officers are asking anyone in and around Teddington Crescent at the time, and who may have video surveillance footage, to contact police at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1877.

Anonymous information can also be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca.
