Durham Regional Police just released new information about a suspicious fire investigation in Oshawa.

The fire at Speak Easy Boxing and Training Academy at 343 Bloor St. W. broke out just before 9 p.m. on Jan. 12, 2022.

Oshawa firefighters quickly contained and extinguished the blaze. The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office conducted a parallel investigation along with Durham Regional Police.

Investigators believe the fire was arson based on evidence from the scene, police said. The fire caused around $100,000 in damage to the building.

Previously, police indicated they were searching for one suspect but investigators now say at least two suspects were involved.

Police initially said a black Ford transit van was associated with the arson. Police now say it was a black, 2019-2021 model Mercedes Sprinter van possibly a diesel.

A spokesperson with Speak Easy Boxing says the gym has not reopened since the fire and likely won’t until the suspects are caught.

Anyone with information can contact Det. Const. Woolley of the Central East Division Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-579-1520, ext. 2732.

Or send anonymous information to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.
