Police in Mississauga, Brampton and across Ontario target drunk, dangerous drivers this weekend

Drunk and aggressive drivers are among those on the radar as police in Mississauga, Brampton and across Ontario kick off a Thanksgiving weekend enforcement blitz today. 

Peel Regional Police, OPP and other police forces will be targeting impaired drivers, aggressive drivers, distracted motorists and those not wearing seatbelts during Operation Impact 2021, a sweeping enforcement and education campaign running Oct. 8-11.  

Police say that with more people travelling on the roads during the long weekend, the annual blitz is intended to save lives and prevent injuries due to dangerous driving habits. 

Police are asking people to call 9-1-1, “at the earliest and safest opportunity,” if they spot aggressive or distracted drivers who are putting others at risk. 

Vehicle collisions kill about 2,000 Canadians each year while seriously injuring another 10,000 people on the roads and highways. 

This year’s Operation Impact theme, Be a Hero Aim for Zero, is intended to drive home the message to motorists and others that their smart decisions can dramatically reduce dangerous driving habits and injuries and deaths caused by such driving behaviour. 

Operation Impact is organized by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, and supports Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025.
