two mississauga playgrounds still not safe to open.

Two playgrounds in Mississauga’s north end remain closed to the public while “safety deficiencies” are addressed, the city says.

Mississauga Ward 9 Coun. Martin Reid said in an update to the community on May 29 the play areas at both Eden Woods Park, located just southeast of Tenth Line West and Aquitaine Avenue in Meadowvale, and Edengrove Park, a short distance to the south, were shut down and that the hope was they’d reopen by June 4.

However, in a followup to constituents this past Friday, Reid said “the playgrounds remain closed while outstanding matters are being addressed to ensure that all equipment and site conditions meet the required safety standards for public use.”

The City of Mississauga, he continued, “is actively working to resolve these issues and facilitate the reopening of the playgrounds as soon as it is safe to do so.

“We recognize the importance of these community spaces for local families and residents and understand the inconvenience this closure may cause. We appreciate your patience and understanding as this work continues.”

Reid said his office will continue to provide regular updates to residents.

The play areas at Eden Woods and Edengrove parks were renovated with new equipment and safety features last fall. However, the sites were temporarily closed once safety concerns were identified earier this year.

The specific concerns have not been divulged.

“The contractor is currently completing corrective work to address identified safety deficiencies and bring both playgrounds into compliance with (appropriate) safety requirements,” Reid said in his May 29 email update. “As part of this process, the contractor is responsible for completing all required corrections, coordinating third-party compliance inspections and providing documentation confirming that the playgrounds meet (appropriate) standards.”

The councillor added at the time that the contractor had targeted June 4 for the reopening of both playgrounds, “subject to the successful completion of third-party inspections confirming that the playground equipment and protective surfacing are compliant and safe for public use.”

Last fall, the City of Mississauga said work to install new play equipment and other features to improve safety and accessibility at the two Meadowvale parks, in addition to nearby Charles “Bud” Brennan Park, was underway and scheduled for completion in mid-October (Edengrove and Bud Brennan parks) and early November (Eden Woods).

The work included:

  • Replacement of playground equipment
  • Installation of engineered wood mulch safety surfacing
  • Paved trail connections and accessible playground ramp
  • New seating

The three play areas were closed to the public while the work was completed.

Similar work was being completed at dozens of other public playgrounds across Mississauga, city officials said earlier in 2025.
