Playgrounds closed, but will soon reopen with new equipment in Mississauga

Three popular playgrounds in north Mississauga are on track to reopen to residents later this fall complete with new play equipment and other features to improve safety and accessibility, the city says.

Work is ongoing at Charles “Bud” Brennan, Edengrove and Eden Woods parks play areas in Meadowvale, Mississauga Ward 9 Coun. Martin Reid said in an online update to residents.

The work includes:

• replacement of playground equipment
• installation of engineered wood mulch safety surfacing
• paved trail connections and accessible playground ramp
• new seating

The three play areas have been closed to the public while work is completed, the City of Mississauga says.

While work at Charles “Bud” Brennan and Edengrove parks began earlier this month, upgrades at Eden Woods Park were scheduled to begin this week, Reid said in his update.

The first two play areas are expected to reopen to residents the week of Oct. 13 while the Eden Woods playground will reopen the week of Nov. 3.

In the meantime, alternate playground locations include:

• For Charles “Bud” Brennan, residents may use Windwood Park (2795 Windwood Dr., walking distance of 950 metres) or Settler’s Green (6440 Glen Erin Dr., walking distance of 1.6 kilometres).
• For Edengrove, residents may use Lisgar Green (6140 Osprey Blvd., 1.3 km away) or Trafalgar Common (3110 McDowell Dr., 1.1 km away).
• For Eden Woods, residents may use Union Park (6627 Tenth Line West, 400 metres away) or Trelawny Woods (3500 Trelawny Circle, 950 metres away).

Similar work has been or is being completed at dozens of other public playgrounds across Mississauga, city officials said earlier this year.

Through its Playground Program, “the city is improving accessibility in community playgrounds with changes that include rubber surfacing, accessible swing sets, ground-level play components and paved access routes,” city officials said in an earlier online project update.

“We are committed to ongoing monitoring of existing playgrounds and continual research of the playground industry to establish best practices for accessibility. Minor accessibility improvements to existing playgrounds can be made on request … We hope these play features will let more children have fun and memorable playground experiences in our public parks.”
