Plane overruns runway on Canada’s East Coast; flights delayed at Pearson Airport in Mississauga, Ontario

Flights to St. John's delayed at Pearson Airport in Mississauga.

Several flights to St. John’s, Nfld. from Pearson Airport in Mississauga have been delayed this afternoon and this evening after a plane overshot the runway at the provincial capital’s airport.

Pearson officials said in a post to social media two flights scheduled to arrive from St. John’s this afternoon have also been delayed due to the runway mishap at the East Coast airport.

“Passengers be advised the remaining three of five departing flights to St. John’s have been delayed. In addition, two out of three arriving flights have also been delayed,” Pearson officials said in a post to X (formerly Twitter).

They advise passengers on scheduled flights to St. John’s and those looking to pick up travellers arriving at Pearson from St. John’s to check the status of flights online.

According to reports out of St. John’s, there were no serious injuries after a De Havilland DHC 8-400 aircraft operated by PAL Airlines “overran the runway on takeoff late this afternoon.”

PAL Airlines is a Canadian regional carrier that operates out of St. John’s International Airport.

“St. John’s International Airport advises the travelling public of potential delays to flight operations for Wednesday evening,” airport officials on the East Coast said in a post to social media. “A charter aircraft overran the runway on takeoff late this afternoon. There are no known injuries to passengers or crew.”

Numerous flights in the air headed to St. John’s Airport at the time of the mishap were diverted to alternate landing sites as are other flights late this afternoon.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has reportedly assigned two investigators to look into the incident.
