Pickering Mayor offers condolences on death of “trailblazing” Hazel McCallion

Calling her a “trailblazer,” Pickering Mayor Kevin Ashe and other members of council expressed their condolences and collective sorrow on the death of long-time Mississauga Mayor and political legend ‘Hurricane’ Hazel McCallion.
“She was the true embodiment of what it meant to be a public servant. Even after she retired as Mississauga’s longest serving mayor, she continued to serve the community,” noted Ashe. “As one of Canada’s longest ever serving mayors Hazel McCallion was a trailblazer in municipal politics who later became a living legend.”
Ashe said McCallion, who died Sunday morning just a couple of weeks before her 102nd birthday, impressed all that had met her with her “unwavering commitment to her community, business acumen, and no-nonsense leadership style” during her half century in municipal politics.
The Pickering Mayor also thanked McCallion for advocating for the rights of municipalities across the province. “She rarely took no for an answer and didn’t hesitate to take on ministers, premiers, or prime ministers to ensure that Mississauga and its sister municipalities received their fair shake from the senior levels of government.”
“Her indomitable spirit and unparalleled legacy shall endure and continue to inspire those who are called to public service.”
All flags at City of Pickering facilities will be flown at half-mast to recognize her passing.
