PetSmart Charities of Canada continued their long-standing support for the Pickering Animal Shelter on Thursday with a $25,000 grant to support the shelter and the animals in its care.

PetSmart Charities’ Adoption Prep Grants are designed to help prepare unsheltered animals for adoption by providing funding to support vaccinations, spay/neuter procedures, staffing, and supplies.

“Thanks to the generosity of PetSmart Charities of Canada, we are able to support more animals in need,” said Lindsey Narraway, Pickering’s Supervisor of Animal Services. “The number of animals coming into the shelter has been growing since the start of the pandemic. In the last year, we’ve cared for 425 animals at the shelter. This funding will be instrumental in supporting our efforts as we continue to take more animals in, provide care, and prepare them for adoption.”

The PetSmart at 1899 Brock Road in Pickering has been a Satellite Adoption Site for the shelter for many years. Since 2018, this partnership has helped find 936 animals their forever homes.

“As the Pickering Animal Shelter continues to help more pets each year, we’re glad to lend support,” said Heidi Marston, Director of Pet Placement Initiatives, PetSmart Charities of Canada. “Ensuring the delivery of critical preventative care promises the best possible start in their new homes. We’re grateful for the important impact they make to families and the local community by connecting pets with people to love.”

The shelter is an integral part of the community, and provides a variety of services, including:

  • Picking up lost, stray, and sick/injured animals
  • Investigating animal-related complaints
  • Public education
  • Community Pet Pantry
  • Volunteer management
