People have mixed reactions to the new downtown mural in Milton

A new mural in downtown Milton is not quite finished but people are voicing their opinions on the project.
Work on the mural on a private building at the Spice o’ Life parkette, 241 Main St. E. started in mid-September, according to the Downtown Milton BIA.
Milton artist Omar (Oms) Hopkinson is the lead artist on the project. Hopkinson and his assistants are continuing to work on the mural this month.
Key themes in design include the past and present of Milton, downtown, vibrant, colourful imagery and diversity. The project is in conjunction with Milton Culture Days presented by Arts Milton.
Many people expressed their love for the new artwork on the Downtown Milton BIA Facebook page.
“Great job.. I personally love it .. Brightens up that corner,” one person wrote on the BIA Facebook.

“Looks awesome, bud! We’ve seen you out there working hard. Can’t wait to see the finished product,” another wrote.
Posts on the Milton Talk Facebook group had more love but also some mixed reactions.
“I loved how they captured different attractions in Milton (mill’s pond) in the letters and representing the diversity here. Excited to see the finished mural,” one person wrote.

Other residents say they miss the old mural, which had been a landmark.
The previous mural was commissioned in the late 1990s, according to Downtown Milton BIA. Artist Sharose, assisted by Pat Schryer, Denise Schryer, Walter Chamberlain, and Arthur Mine, created their conception of the Mill Pond at the turn of the century. People were shown walking, fishing, and playing.
Unfortunately, time, weather and UV light damaged the artwork and the property owner needed to repair the wall. This further impacted the state of artwork, and the original artist could not be located to make repairs.
