Pearson Airport will officially reopen its second-busiest runway next week.

The east/west runway 06L/24R shut down in early April of this year for much-needed upgrades. The three-kilometre-long east-west landing strip was built in the 1960s and was in desperate need of upgrades to ensure aircraft and passenger safety.

The project is one of the largest runway rehabilitation projects in the airport’s history and included the full-depth replacement and lighting upgrade of the runway and adjacent taxiways, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) said.

It was completed on time and on budget, the GTAA added.

For people who live near the airport, the project end may be a relief. During the project, residential neighbourhoods to the north, south, east and west of Pearson might have noticed more aircraft overhead.  Travellers and area residents also may have experienced delays, disruptions and added aircraft noise.

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the completed rehabilitation project is on Monday (Nov. 21) morning.

Officials, including Deborah Flint, president and CEO of the GTAA; Canada’s Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra, local elected officials; and representatives of Dufferin Construction and Avia NG are expected at the ceremony.

The project was partially funded by the federal government’s Airport Critical Infrastructure Program.
