Mississauga’s Pearson Airport welcomed a new airline to its runways earlier this week, linking it with a distant corner of the world.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines is now on track to soon begin operating regularly out of Pearson after landing its first non-stop flight at the Mississauga-based airport last Saturday morning (March 26).

The trial flight from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, took about 18 1/2 hours and covered 12,438 kilometres, according to airport records. From Dhaka, the Boeing 787-9 flew westward over India, Pakistan, Iran and much of Europe before crossing the North Atlantic Ocean and then landing at Pearson.

Flight BG305, which also marked Bangladesh Independence Day, landed at Pearson on March 26 at 7:38 a.m., 23 minutes later than its anticipated arrival time.

Airline officials said all passengers on board presented negative COVID-19 test results prior to the flight. New travel rules related to COVID-19 don’t take effect in Canada until April 1.

The return flight departed Pearson on Tuesday morning.

Bangladesh Airlines officials say the flight was made on an experimental basis with an eye towards beginning regular service three times a week in June.

They say they’ve been hoping for the past two years to begin service to Pearson in response to a strong demand.

Officials in Bangladesh say 100,000 Bangladeshis are currently living in Canada, including some 8,000 students studying here.
