outdoor swimming pools open for the summer in mississauga.

Temperatures aren’t expected to be too hot this week in Mississauga, but the city’s seven outdoor swimming pools are now open for those who want to take a dip anyway.

In noting the pools opened for the season on Saturday, City of Mississauga officials also took the opportunity to remind people “to put safety first” — not only in and near swimming pools, but around all bodies of water.

“As residents swim and play in water, whether at pools, spray pads, lakes, rivers and beaches, it’s important to know the risks. Summer is the time when most water-related accidents happen,” the city said, pointing to statistics from Canada’s Lifesaving Society that show some 66 per cent of drowning deaths occur between May and September, “with the highest number in July. This is why it is important to think about safety before heading outside.”

The city has expanded its free life jacket-lending program this year “to help more people stay safe while enjoying the water,” officials added.

A wide range of classes teaching people of all ages how to swim is also offered by the city.

Mississauga’s seven outdoor pools:

  • Applewood Heights — 3119 Constitution Blvd.
  • David Ramsey — 2470 Thorn Lodge Dr.
  • Don McLean Westacres — 2166 Westfield Dr.
  • Erindale — 1244 Shamir Cres.
  • Lewis Bradley — 745 Inverhouse Dr.
  • Lions Club of Credit Valley — 20 Rosewood Ave.
  • Streetsville — 335 Church St.

Meanwhile, some 30 splash pads and a popular cooling-off spot in the city’s downtown core opened for the spring and summer last month.

Families can enjoy the splash areas well into September, weather permitting, the city says, adding the pads open daily at 9 a.m. The areas are unsupervised.

“Spray pads are free to use and easy to visit. They are a safe and fun way to cool down on hot days,” the city said.

The popular Celebration Square fountain and wading pool in the downtown core, next to city hall, also opened for the season in mid-May. It’s free to use and open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. until Labour Day and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. after Labour Day.

“The water is shallow and designed for young children, but the wading pool is not supervised,” officials said in an earlier public notice. “Parents and guardians must stay close and actively watch their children. There is plenty of seating nearby to help you keep an eye on the fun.”

The splash pads and Celebration Square amenities have become popular spring and summer cooling-off spots over the years for many Mississauga residents looking to escape the heat on hot days.
