Oshawa’s Ontario Tech University earning recognition on the world stage

Fresh off a top ten placing in Maclean’s magazine annual university rankings in Canada, Ontario Tech University in Oshawa is also seeing its international reputation blossom.

For the first time in its 18-year history, Ontario Tech appeared in the world’s most influential global university rankings: the Times Higher Education World University Rankings as well as ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. These rankings demonstrate Ontario Tech’s growing global influence and reach for its excellence in research and teaching.

Ontario Tech offers an array of market-driven undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs and has assembled a powerful portfolio of leading collaborative research across seven faculties.

The Times Higher Education rankings evaluated schools based on five performance indicators – teaching/learning environment, research (volume, income and reputation), research citations, international outlook and industry income.

The Shanghai rankings of the top 1,000 international universities looked at 54 different subject areas and a range of academic indicators and third-party data to measure such metrics as research output, research influence, international collaboration, research quality and international academic awards.

“Given that we rank competitively, and in some cases ahead of many of our higher-tier and older Canadian university peers, these survey results objectively demonstrate Ontario Tech University punches well above its weight in research and teaching,” said Dr. Les Jacobs, Vice-President, Research and Innovation, Ontario Tech University.

“Ontario Tech has established a tremendous narrative of research intensity in a remarkably short period of time. This is an achievement our alumni, students, faculty and community partners can be very proud of.”

Ontario Tech also made the list in the 2022 U.S. News and World Report, placing 28 in Canada and tenth in Ontario. The school also ranked 124 in the world (4 in Ontario and Canada) in energy and fuels and 216 in engineering.

In the Center for World University Rankings OTU placed 34 in Canada.
