Oshawa opens new bike path system on Thornton Road

Oshawa has opened a new bike path in the city, a multi-use path system on Thornton Road North that connects to the existing cycling path on Taunton Road.
The Taunton Road West multi-use path was also recently extended from Northbrook Street to Somerville Street connecting with the on-road bike route.
Pavement markings and signage have been added along Thornton Road to provide a seamless connection and to ensure drivers are aware of the new path system. Additionally, the new multi-use path connects to Oshawa’s new BMX Park located on Thornton Road, just south of the Oshawa Airport Golf Club.
Design and construction on the project began in fall 2020 after the City received funding from the Ontario Municipal Commuter Cycling Program, which aims to make it easier for commuters to get around by bike and to build a better and safer cycling commuter network across the province. The project was completed in June and is now open to cyclists.
“It’s exciting to offer more options for Oshawa residents to get around in a safe and environmentally friendly way,” said Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter. “I’m pleased to see this new multi-use path system being welcomed by cycling enthusiasts, residents and visitors.”
Oshawa was one of the first municipalities in Ontario to be designated a bicycle friendly community by Canada’s Share the Road Cycling Coalition.

In 2015, City Council endorsed the Active Transportation Master Plan, which recommends a connected, attractive and convenient active transportation system that expands recreation options, encourages sustainable modes of transportation, respects the natural scenic character and supports economic development.
