Oshawa Firefighters were busy Saturday morning battling a blaze on Simcoe St. S. right next to a church.

Firefighters arrived at 492 Simcoe St. S, near Elena Street and next door to St. James Presbyterian Church, to “heavy smoke and fire conditions” around 5 a.m. but were able to extinguish the fire by 7:30 a.m.

Oshawa Fire was still on scene a few hours later attending to all remaining smouldering areas and are advising residents to stay clear of Simcoe Street between First Avenue and Mill Street.

Firefighters were also busy fighting a residential fire on Bloor Street near Wilson Road a couple of kilometres to the east on Friday afternoon.

Oshawa Fire praised the actions of Durham Paramedics who were in the area and called in the fire. “Paramedics also alerted neighbors before the fire arrived just to make sure everyone was safe”

The house was saved with only minor damage.
